Wheelchair transport, safe and accessible
Ambulance and accessible vehicle transport for patients who use manual or power wheelchairs. Vehicles equipped with ramp or lift systems, securement tracks, and trained crew for safe boarding, transit, and arrival.
What wheelchair transport means
Wheelchair transport provides safe, accessible medical transport for patients who use manual or power wheelchairs and cannot safely transfer to a standard ambulance stretcher, or for whom wheelchair transport is medically indicated. Our wheelchair-accessible vehicles are fitted with hydraulic lift or ramp boarding systems and certified tie-down and securement tracks for all common wheelchair frame types.
Crew is trained in wheelchair securement to WTORS (Wheelchair Tie-Down and Occupant Restraint System) standards, safe patient handling, and the specific boarding and exit procedures for our vehicle fleet. We carry oxygen and basic monitoring equipment on all wheelchair-transport runs and can upgrade to a stretcher-equipped BLS unit when medically needed.
Wheelchair transport is appropriate for ambulatory limitations that require accessible vehicle use but not necessarily stretcher transport. If a patient requires supine positioning, vital sign monitoring during transit, or has an active medical concern, a standard BLS or ALS ambulance unit is more appropriate. Our dispatch team will ask screening questions to assign the correct vehicle type.
When wheelchair transport is the right choice
- Physician appointments for patients who cannot transfer out of wheelchair
- Dialysis or infusion therapy for wheelchair-dependent patients
- Outpatient therapy or rehabilitation sessions
- Post-discharge transport where ambulance stretcher is not required
- Social service or government agency appointments requiring accessible transport
- Patients with neuromuscular conditions, spinal cord injury, or stroke-related mobility impairment
